CHELMSFORD & MALDON DISTRICTS REPORT TO ECNWA

MEETING ON 20th FEBRUARY 2024

Chelmsford and Maldon Districts continue to work well together as a combined locality - which makes sense as we share the same area as the Community Policing Team (CPT)..There are some 85 registered localities across Chelmsford (both urban and rural - parishes & non-parished areas), and likewise 37 local groups across Maldon.  We meet every two months and whilst attendance it not overwhelming there is always a good cross-section from across both districts. The CPT and Community Safety officers from Chelmsford City Council (who cover Maldon too) always engage and support.  We have regular contact with the CPT Inspector and team, and we also meet with the District Commander on a planned basis.

Our two NhW Police liaison officers (one for Chelmsford and one for Maldon - although they work closely as a team) are excellent.

The Community Safety Team at Chelmsford City Council - which also is the link for Maldon District Council - are very supportive.

Many of our groups are very strong (both urban and rural) - whilst some have difficulty is maintaining interest from local residents - until they may be a spate of crimes - like car thefts, burglaries, etc.

Main concerns include garden shed attack, car theft (especially keyless car theft), bicycle theft, and domestic burglaries. ASB - particularly in the form of on-street drug dealing - is a nuisance and remains a concern. Rural crime is a concern (including thefts from farms and hare coursing) - especially in our more remote areas.   Our communications with the Police is good - we encourage the use of tiered approach to reporting: we say ALWAYS use 999 in an emergency of course, then on-line (via police chat on their website, and the various reporting links on their website); we also have the email link to the CPT and a direct mobile phone number. We have a WhatsApp group for all NhW localities across Chelmsford and Maldon. The Police are very keen to demonstrate that all information (intelligence etc) is taken seriously even if they cannot respond to all information feed. We seek to provide support and advice to local groups and groups expressing interest in forming local Watches.
